Make A Difference Day is the largest national day where people come together and make a difference in their community. The goal of the Bakersfield project is to make a difference in our community by presenting and implementing alternative ideas to our youth in place of graffiti, tagging, and vandalism. This includes the redirection of youth talent through a mural project by art students at Community Learning Center.

To create the mural, Mrs. Darlene Gonzalez's art students collaborated with local artist, Robert Ross, from the mural's conception to its completion. CLC students discussed and story boarded ideas to illustrate the many ways they could improve their community. They proposed programs to remove graffiti; protect the environment; stop violence in the community; help the young, less fortunate, and the elderly; and enrich the community through the arts. These hopes are symbolically represented in the Make a Difference Day Mural Project.

On Saturday October 25, 1997, the CLC staff and students along with AmeriCorps members, volunteered and made a difference in their community by painting over graffiti throughout the Bakersfield area.

"Make A Difference Day" for the good of all...
