Did you know that almost 40 percent of Californians’ throwaways consist of compostable organic materials – fruits, vegetables, grass clippings, and tree trimmings that could nourish the farms and gardens of our state? Most of these materials end up in landfills. Disposal is the wrong option for such valuable resources.  Buying and using compost, mulch and other soil amendments made with urban organic materials also helps “close the recycling loop” by putting these precious commodities back into soil instead of wasting them in landfills. Making compost on farms, backyards, and school gardens or using worm bins for kitchen scraps conserves resources and uses valuable organic
material.

Most Californians own something that uses motor oil, either an automobile, boat, motorcycle, tractor, or lawn mower. If you service your vehicles, it is important to remember to recycle your used oil, filters and any other automobile fluid so that we do not pollute our waterways and other precious resources. In addition, remember to recycle household hazardous waste materials you may have in your home (such as cleaners, paint, batteries, pesticides, etc). To find a location close to your home to recycle, please call

Keeping safe in a power outage

Tip: Don't Forget the Surge Protector.
Now that you've shelled out all that cash for a new system, don't skimp on the surge protector. Plugging your computer and components into a surge protector can save you from brownout - induced system crashes, data loss, and even (gasp) system meltdown if your power supply experiences an electrical surge. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when rolling blackouts and power issues are becoming more prevalent.
