The Basque Experience

::
Ongi etorriak - Welcome
The Project:
"The Basque Experience Project" was initially designed to educate students from Community Learning Center about the contributions of the Basque culture in Kern County.  However, as the project evolved, we realized the potential of the site as a resource for all web users.  As the project continues to grow, we would appreciate participation from the Basque community, perhaps in the sharing of memories, poems, music, recipes, photography etc.  If you would like to contribute, please e-mail the project managers at the address below.

By myself I dream,
Alone I come and go
Like the waves of the sea . . .
-- a Basque sea chantey
_______
Basques sailed with Columbus and helped colonize the New World, but their cultural center of gravity lies in their homeland of Spain and France. Their traditions have endured in laws, music, dance, sports, cuisine, and above all --- their language.  The Basque language, predates the Latin-based Romance languages and resembles no other tongue in Europe.  In addition, blood-typing and other genetic studies show the Basque to be a people distinct from any other in Europe, evidently due to their settlement in the region of the Pyrenees and Cantabrian Mountains.  As a saying goes,

"Before God was God and boulders were boulders, the Basques were already Basques."
